Mothers’ Day Celebration

Our preschool students from Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Carr’s classes celebrated their Moms with a Mother’s Day Tea.  The children sang a song and presented their Moms with small gifts.  Everyone socialized and had a wonderful time.  Happy Mothers’ Day!

Earth Day Kindness

Hillside’s Kindness committee wanted to be kind to our environment, so they decided to beautify some areas of the school. Mrs. Betley and the committee spent several days weeding, mulching and planting new perennials.  Mr. Waddell donated the plants for this project.  The students really enjoyed working on this goal and we are so proud of their efforts and the change in the aesthetics of the school.IMG_3604.JPG

Super Science Assembly

The PTO sponsored another wonderful assembly for the students.  David from The Franklin Institute presented 2 assemblies for the children focusing on weather and the water cycle.  The students really enjoyed the cool experiments and were able to participate.

Chess Club at Hillside

Each year Mrs. Wright works with out third and fourth grade children by sponsoring a chess club.  She even persuaded her husband, Mark, to come and play our superstars.  This past week we had chess match finals and some of our children were vying for the gold.  It is a very competitive group and they take their matches very seriously. Hail to our winners!IMG_0035.JPG

Hillside Celebrates One Book, One School

Mrs. Eley introduced Hillside’s One Book, One School to the children and parents at the end of January.  She had hinted about the book and on January 29, she introduced “Charlotte’s Web” as our book.  Each child received a copy of the book and a reading schedule.  Our staff read chapters of the book as well.  The culmination took place on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ Day. ( A perfect day for this!)

The children gathered for an assembly and played trivia and other games associated with the book.  Our PTO provided lemonade and popcorn for the children to go along with the County Fair theme in the book.  The whole project was a huge success !  Anytime families read together they build a wonderful bond.P1070137

Hillside Raises Money for JRFH

Ms. Ingham, our PE teacher posed a challenge to our students to raise enough money by jumping rope for the heart association to beat last year’s total.    The students came through and surpassed our school goal of $7000.  Ms. Ingham promised the students that they could throw pies in certain staff members’ faces, including Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Betley, Ms Ingham and classroom teachers if they reached their goal.

On February 4, the students had the opportunity to do just that.  We are proud of the Hillside community for supporting our fundraiser.  Kindness continues to prevail.IMG_0851[3].JPG

First Grade Students Learn how to Code

In keeping with the Hour of Code, Mr. Bowman our computer teacher, worked with our first grade students to help them to understand coding. The students were successful in writing code using these fun sites, and

Our 3rd grade and fourth grade students are working through a variety of coding activities on Mr. Bowman’s website after completing their Course 2 work.

If you want more information about the Hour of Code you can go to  Hour of Code website.

Hillside’s First Turkey Trot

DSC02395.jpgHillside School held its first Turkey Trot on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  Under the direction of Ms. Ingham, Mrs. Betley and the Kindness Committee we raised over $800. for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Child Life-Cardiac Fund.  This fund helps to support young cardiac patients while in the hospital.

The weather was beautiful and the students and staff came out to run and walk.  All children received a kindness charm to celebrate the event. The event was a huge success and we want to thank everyone who contributed to this special day.

Celebrating our Kind Students!

Last week we celebrated all of the students who received “kindness hands” in the month of October.  The students were brought to the stage and we read what kind deeds they had performed in front of the whole student body. We wanted to recognize these students and hope to inspire more students to help their peers.

Mrs. Betley, our guidance counselor, has the best job of all!  She emails each parent when a child receives a hand.  The response from parents has been amazing and she claims it is the best part of her day!  P1060812
